The Department of Justice (DOJ), formerly known as the Department of Legal Affairs (DLA) and originally the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), is the executive department tasked with defending the national legal interest, and investigating and prosecuting crimes on behalf of the federal government. History
The Department of Justice was created in July 2020 as the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). During its early history, the Attorney General was not considered a department Secretary. In mid-2022, the OAG was rebranded to the Department of Legal Affairs before eventually receiving its current name. The Department of Justice remains the primary workplace for those interested in criminal law.
Duties and responsibilities
The Department of Justice holds several key responsibilities:
- Defending the government and its national security interests
- Conducting criminal prosecutions on behalf of the state
- Handling litigation for ordinary prosecution and defence cases
- Upholding the law across all federal jurisdictions
Structure and operations
The Department of Justice operates through a structured hierarchy that includes distinct leadership roles and specialised operational units.
Leadership
The following roles comprise the executive management of the DOJ:
- Attorney General The head of the department, serving simultaneously as the Department Secretary.
- Solicitor General Serves as the Deputy Secretary. In addition to acting as the second-in-command, this role oversees the Appellate Unit.
- Lead Attorney Leads the Litigation Unit and directly supervises all prosecutors within the department.
- RBI Director Leads the investigative branch known as the RBI.
Litigation and appellate units
The Litigation Unit handles ordinary prosecution and defence cases, while the Appellate Unit handles appeals. Both units share the following employment ranks:
