District Court

The District Court of Redmont (or "DCR") is the lowest court in the Redmont judiciary, below the Federal Court and Supreme Court. Cases before the District Court are presided over by a single magistrate, who are appointed by the Supreme Court. There is no limit to the amount of magistrates that may serve on the court.[1] With the creation of the Junior Magistrate Program, junior magistrates may be hired on a temporary or trial basis.

Jurisdiction

The‌ ‌District‌ ‌Court‌ ‌of‌ ‌Redmont‌ ‌hears‌ ‌all‌ ‌minor‌ ‌civil‌ ‌and‌ ‌criminal‌ ‌disputes‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌first‌ ‌instance.‌ ‌If you are unsure as to whether you should file the case in the District Court, please seek the advice of a lawyer. These are the limitations of the District Court:

  • The‌ ‌District‌ ‌Court‌ can issue ‌judgments‌ ‌on‌ ‌minor‌ ‌criminal‌ ‌prosecutions‌ ‌that‌ ‌result‌ ‌in‌ ‌a maximum of ‌60 ‌minutes‌ jail ‌or‌ ‌$10,000 in ‌fines.‌ ‌
  • The‌ ‌District‌ ‌Court‌ ‌can issue ‌judgments‌ ‌on‌ ‌minor‌ ‌civil‌ ‌cases‌ ‌whose‌ ‌value‌ ‌does‌ ‌not‌ ‌exceed‌ ‌$120,000‌.
  • The‌ ‌District‌ ‌Court‌ ‌can‌ ‌hear‌ ‌cases‌ ‌that‌ ‌do‌ ‌not‌ ‌involve‌ ‌a‌ ‌lawyer.‌ [50]

Case Presentation

There are two forms of litigation: criminal and civil. Civil action can be filed by anyone, while criminal action is restricted to members of the Department of Justice.
