Democracy Daily (sometimes abbreviated as DD) was a newspaper founded by Westray.[1] The company's main source of revenue was from subscriptions and advertising, but offered free news.[2] It is believed to eventually have become a subsidiary of Ray Corp, an umbrella corporation.[3]

History

The newspaper was founded by former President Westray on 23 August 2020 and officially registered on 13 September; the company was founded earlier but registered to use the #news section in Discord.[2] It is self-claimed to be "the longest-running news source on the server."[1] Democracy Daily employed Ansgardd for three weeks to a month.[4] Bubba_Tea_, husband of ElainaThomas29, worked as its manager for some time.[5] In December 2020, the Department of Education and Commerce ranked Ray Corp (the umbrella corporation which held Democracy Daily) fifth in the nation when combined with Raybucks and Dunder Mifflin, its other two subsidiaries. Its revenue was reported to be $303,000.[3] Ray Corp was ranked fourth in February 2021 with a reported revenue of $615,000.[6] ElementPenguin was a writer for a period of time.[7]

Then-President Westray, owner of Democracy Daily, issued an executive order on 15 June 2022, pardoning his own newspaper, and others, of slander.[8]

All news companies, including, but not limited to, The Redmont Journal, The Redmont Times, Democracy Daily, and any other news company (with the exception of Politico) are hereby pardoned of any crimes related to Slander.[8]

On 25 July 2022, then-Representative xlayzur "motioned to add Democracy Daily to the Library of Congress; granting the DD with their own thread to preserve important articles and graphics relating to the Commonwealths political field over time." This motion passed 9-0-0.[9] On 14 July 2022, "the Board of Democracy Daily voted to close operations," according to an official statement released by the company. "This was after multiple senior-level employees have left the server since." At its end, Democracy Daily had published over 300 articles.[10]

I think journalism is a crucial aspect of all democracies. I've spent many hours and have dedicated a lot of time to keep Democracy Daily active and consistent. I hope the legacy of this newspaper is remembered, and it serves as a historical record of the past. —Westray.[10]
