In August 2021, a general strike was organised by the Union of Commerce following the Department of Education and Commerce's controversial decision requiring businesses to self-report their prices in order to compile the Consumer Price Index (CPI) — labour previously done by economists.[1][2][3][4]
The decision had other economic effects: accountants, numbering circa 73 at the time, had trouble in finding work. With the need to keep track their own prices came the creation of independent accounting firms.[5]
The DEC Investigation Committee, chaired by 1950minecrafter, investigated "the firing[s and resignations] of several department employees". Secretary of Education and Commerce hugebob23456 was found to have leaked confidential communications between department employees and President _Austin27_ in which employees had reported concerns regarding the secretary's perceived inactivity and demeanor.[6]
hugebob23456 began negotiations with the Union of Commerce on or around 19 August.[7][8]
