The press secretary is an executive officer position established under the Executive Standards Act and is appointed by the president, serving at their pleasure. There can only be up to 1 press secretary at a time.[1] The current press secretary is tortenwashere.[2]

1st press secretary (then titled press advisor) MilkCrack at their first press conference, dated 16 or 17 January 2021.

History

The position of press secretary was originally titled press advisor and was first created by President Westray through the issuing of Executive Order 01/21 - Establish a Press Advisor on 11 January 2021.[3] The press advisor was created as a general advisor position, meaning that Congress had the power to remove the position, and that they served at the president's pleasure.[4] An expression of interest form for the position was then issued.[5]

On 16 February 2021, the press advisor was first established into law under the Office of the President Act, proposed by Intercepticon and signed by President Krix on 16 February 2021.[6] On 12 May 2021, the Executive Standards Act, proposed by xEndeavour and signed by President hugebob23456 on 12 May 2021 repealed the Office of the President Act but left the press advisor position unchanged.[7]

On 30 November 2024, President UnityMaster signed the Executive Officer Freedom Act, authored by him and then-Speaker of the House CaseyLeFaye, into law, which renamed the position of press advisor to press secretary and removed the restriction that a president is limited to only 1.[8] On 26 January 2025, in the case of RoryyyMC v. The Commonwealth of Redmont [2024] FCR 129, the Federal Court repealed the Executive Officer Freedom Act, finding it to be a complex change and therefore requiring a referendum before being passed into law. The court, however, ordered there to be a referendum, and allowed officers hired under the act to retain their position until the conclusion of the referendum.[9] The referendum passed on 1 February 2025 with a vote of 17-5.[10]
