The Department of Health (DOH) is the department of the executive branch tasked with maintaining the good health of the people of the Commonwealth of Redmont, as well as to maintain Hospitals to reasonably accommodate demand. It plays a significant role in the creation and the treatment of infectious diseases, and is charged with the administration of restricted medical devices and materials. The department is currently headed by Acting Secretary Bardiya_King.
History
Location
The department's headquarters are located within Reveille Hospital. The hospital houses offices for the Secretary of Health, the Medical Specialists who form the Medical Council, and Senior Doctors. There is also office space in the hospital for epidemiologists employed by the department.
The department also runs several other locations, namely University Hospital, Esplanade Square Hospital, Aventura Clinic, and Oakridge Clinic.
Structure
Secretary of Health
The operation of the DOH is overseen by the Secretary of Health (SoH) and the Deputy Secretary of Health (DSoH).
The secretary is ultimately responsible for the work, direction, and policy of the DOH. They have a direct role in the hiring of new staff to the department, with doctors, epidemiologists, and Medical Specialists requiring secretary approval and appointment. In this capacity, they may also open or close medical exams, a power previously held by the Department of Education.
The DSoH works to support the SoH in their role administering the department. They are also an important figure in decisions of staff conduct.
Medical Council
The Medical Council is a policy-setting and administrative body for the DOH. It is comprised of Medical Specialists, the SoH, and the DSoH. Medical Specialists are experienced doctors who help to run the department. They oversee the training of new doctors, vote on applications to DOH staff positions, and assist in the creation and amendment of department policy.
Budget and finances
The Department of Health was apportioned a monthly budget for June 2025 of $350,000, up $15,000 since the previous budget in May of that year. This was the first increase in the departments apportioned budget since December 2024[2].
Programmes
Medicare
The Medicare programme is an initiative ran by the DOH to provide affordable healthcare to all in Redmont. Under the scheme, the DOH pays the cost of treatments for individuals covered by Medicare. As of 28 Janurary 2025, Medicare became an opt-out scheme, providing coverage for all citizens of Redmont[3].
