The Department of Justice (DOJ), formerly known as the Department of Legal Affairs, is the executive department tasked with defending the national legal interest, and investigating and prosecuting crimes on behalf of the federal government. The department exists to defend the government and its national security interests, conduct prosecutions, and uphold the law. Specific responsibilities regularly adapt depending on the circumstances and the needs of the government.

History

The Department of Justice was established in July 2020 as one of the core branches of the government. In its early days, it was formally known as the Department of Legal Affairs before being rebranded.

Over the years, the department has been led by numerous Secretaries and has faced various periods of change. Despite experiencing some troublesome times in the past, the DOJ is currently in a strong period of recovery and growth under new leadership. The work environment is highly dynamic; because the outcome of trials is never fully clear and unexpected things happen, department personnel must remain flexible and adaptable. It is a highly recommended department for anyone interested in criminal law.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Justice holds several key responsibilities:

• Handling litigation for ordinary prosecution and defense cases
• Upholding the law across all federal jurisdictions

Structure and operations

The Department of Justice operates through a structured hierarchy that includes distinct leadership roles and specialized operational units.

Leadership

The following roles comprise the executive management of the DOJ:

• Attorney General The head of the department, serving simultaneously as the Department Secretary.
• Solicitor General Serves as the Deputy Secretary. In addition to acting as the second-in-command, this role oversees the Appellate Unit.
• Lead Attorney Leads the Litigation Unit and directly supervises all prosecutors within the department.
• RBI Director Leads the investigative branch known as the RBI.

Litigation and Appellate Units

The Litigation Unit handles ordinary prosecution and defense cases, while the Appellate Unit handles appeals. Both units share the following employment ranks:

• Senior Prosecutor
• Prosecutor
• Trainee Prosecutor

RBI

The RBI operates as the primary investigative force for the department and uses the following ranks:

• Lead Investigator
• Investigator
• Junior Investigator Also officially recognized as Trainee Investigator.
