The Department of Commerce (DOC) is the department of the executive branch tasked with overseeing and supporting the economy of Redmont, providing support to Redmontian businesses and ensuring financial compliance within the financial and banking sectors. It plays a significant role by overseeing the nation's financial institutions through audits and reviews, documenting monthly consumer price indexes, managing business incorporation and grants, as well as the distribution of monthly business and campaign shoutouts. The department is currently headed by Secretary xSyncx.
History
The department was initially established as the Department of Education and Commerce (DEC), overseeing both education and cultural heritage alongside economic policy and regulation. In October 2022, following the successful referendum of the Department Reform Act[1], the DEC was split into the Department of Commerce and the Department of Education (DOE). The reason for the split was, according to then-Speaker of the House xEndeavour: "a historical abandonment of education in Government, partly due to the large portfolio of responsibilities of the DEC and the primacy of economics within that department".[2]
In both its tenure as part of the Department of Education and Commerce and as an independent body, the department has been essential in monitoring the functionality of Redmont's economy and taking steps to neutralise threats to the nation's economic stability. The department has overseen many initiatives to grow Redmont's economy.
